Moving to Offense in a Time of Collapse: A Scenario Framework for the Future of Equity-Centered Philanthropy offers philanthropic leaders a way to navigate profound uncertainty without losing sight of long-term equity goals. At a moment when democratic norms, public institutions, and civic space are under intense strain, this framework invites readers to move beyond defensive postures and toward more proactive, strategic action.
This report uses scenario planning to explore four plausible futures for equity-centered philanthropy over the next decade. Rather than predicting what will happen, the scenarios are designed to stretch our thinking and help leaders rehearse alternative futures, identify risks and opportunities, and clarify what bold action for equity could look like across very different contexts.
Across the scenarios, one insight is clear: learning and evaluation are not peripheral. They are critical infrastructure for resilience, adaptation, and transformation. The report highlights how learning can become strategy—supporting funders and communities to sense shifting conditions, stay grounded in values, and act with intention even amid disruption.
We invite philanthropic leaders, learning and evaluation practitioners, and movement partners to explore the scenarios and reflect on what it will take to move from collapse toward transformation together.
